Case Studies

Motorcycle Safety Gear Store

Taking an audit of all life experiences thus far, one of the things that has stood out for me is motorcycling. Back in 2017, I was still a fledgling biker with a lifetime’s experience in cycling. Getting into motorcycling was a no-brainer.

The shift from human-powered to motor-powered cycling was thrilling but slightly dangerous. More than slightly, to be honest. Finding safety gear was an issue. There was only one Facebook page with relevant information about biking in Kenya. I saw a gap that needed filling.

In order to create a bikers catalog and community of information sharing, The Gear Store was born. The aim was to provide all crucial and necessary biking information: where to buy safety gear, where to find an accessible mechanic, where to get professional riding training, where biking events were happening… you get the point.

As always, the first step was to register the company. With the company’s main objectives in mind, I hastily moved to the branding stage. The great thing about inspired ideas is that you basically drown in them {ideas}. There were a million possibilities. I had to narrow them down to the bare essentials. It would be a “store/shop” for “safety gear” and “motorcycling information.”

The concepts I had in mind were: a helmet, a transmission gear, and an information icon. As you can see, the process of trying to merge the concepts was a chaotic but fruitful one. I ended up with custom icons in my quest to find the right logomark, an unexpected win.

With the logo’s design squared away, the website and other marketing materials were next up. I’ll cover the website development in a separate post since that was its own unique journey.

The social media and printing material designs were easy to deal with. With the logo as a great starting point, all that was needed was to match its design with the styling of the information.

I created social media profile banner images, marketing ads, funny posters, and reusable bike sale placards.
